The Fair Housing Act: 50 Years Later

The Bob Graham Center for Public Service, the Robert F. Lanzillotti Public Policy Research Center and the Department of Economics hosted a panel discussion on U.S. housing policy on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora with Edward Golding, who served as a senior adviser at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Michael D. Calhoun president of the Center for Responsible Lending, and Gustavo Velasquez, director of the Urban Institute’s Washington-Area Research Initiative.
The program reviewed issues related to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, predatory lending and fair housing practices and took a historical look at housing policy in the U.S., using the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act (1968) and 10th anniversary of the recession as a starting point. Panelists discussed whether progress has been made on black and Latino ownership, the probability of congressional action on housing reform and the role of housing on income and wealth.
