The Gulf: Making of an American Sea

Jack E. Davis, professor of environmental history and sustainability studies at the University of Florida, discussed his latest book, The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea, on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora. The book is a finalist for the Kirkus Prize and a semifinalist for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence.
A comprehensive history of the Gulf of Mexico, Davis tells the larger narrative of the American Sea ― from the sportfish that brought the earliest tourists, to Hollywood’s engagement with the first offshore oil wells, to the presidents who directed western expansion toward its shores.
He is the author of the award-winning An Everglades Providence: Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century, a story of America’s premier wetlands and the woman who led a movement to save it.
