Son of Real Florida: Stories from my Life

Jeff Klinkenberg hates Florida Man. At least, he hates the hashtag. “Klink,” who spent four decades covering Florida culture for the Tampa Bay Times, says #FloridaMan is a fake, a distraction from what real Florida Men and Florida Women value about our state – and from the work ahead to better this beautiful, flawed place.
For nearly half a century, award-winning journalist, author and CJC alum Jeff Klinkenberg has written about the emerging culture, politics and economics of Florida. At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8 in the Pugh Hall Ocora, Klinkenberg shared his perspectives on why #FloridaMan paints an inaccurate picture of the real Florida.
Klinkenberg is a two-time winner of the Paul Hansell Distinguished Journalism Award. In 2018, he won the Florida Humanities Council’s Florida Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing, joining previous recipients, Carl Hiaasen and Patrick Smith. That same year, the state of Florida gave him its Heritage Award for his Florida essays, joining the likes of Marjory Kinnan Rawlings and Zora Neale Hurston.
He is the author of six books, most recently Son of Real Florida: Stories from My Life and Alligators in B-Flat: Improbable Tales from the Files of Real Florida.
