Soccer in Diplomacy Watch Party

November 29, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

fifa world cup logog

Soccer is the only sport played in every corner of the world. Can soccer also be an effective means of global diplomacy?

The Bob Graham Center and UF’s History Department hosted an informal watch party of the U.S. v. Iran World Cup soccer match to learn more about the beautiful game’s role in history, politics, religion, as well as the struggle for class, gender, and racial equality.

Professors Matt Jacobs and Philip Janzen discussed how soccer has been entangled with wars, the spread of empires, the rise of nationalist
movements, and the reigns of dictators.
