Scott Ellsworth: The Secret Game

The University of Florida’s Samuel Proctor Oral History Program hosted a book talk with University of Michigan history professor, Dr. Scott Ellsworth entitled, “THE SECRET GAME: Race, Sports, and Change in the Jim Crow South” in Pugh Hall, located on the campus of the University of Florida.
Dr. Ellsworth’s talk coincided with the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program’s fall internship on “Sport at UF,” which aims at gathering oral histories of former UF student-athletes. His lecture looked at the importance of using sports history as a lens through which to understand race relations in American history.
Ellsworth, author of The Secret Game: A Wartime Story of Courage, Change, and Basketball’s Lost Triumph, a 2015 publication by Little, Brown and Company, recently won the 2016 PEN/ESPY Award for Literary Sports Writing for his work. Legendary Productions has recently acquired the rights to Dr. Ellsworth’s book, which will be made into a feature film.
The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program is an award-winning program oral history center. Their mission is to gather, preserve and promote living histories of individuals from all walks of life.
The Bob Graham Center for Public Service, College of Journalism and Communications, African American Studies and the Department of History cosponsored this event.
