Presidential Power: Truman and the Steel Crisis
December 1, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Join Mark Adams, Education Director for the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum via Zoom on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 4:00 PM to learn more about President Truman and the Steel Crisis of 1952.
The early 1950s were marred by conflict abroad and domestically, as President Truman deployed American troops for the Korean War and attempted to rein in inflation. A strike by steel workers seemed inevitable as steel mills and labor unions failed to reach an agreement on prices and wages.
In an attempt to avoid derailing steel supply to American troops in Korea, Truman reacted by seizing the steel mills. This show of presidential power sparked a constitutional crisis that tested the ability of government checks and balance.
Come hear more about this contentious episode in American history directly from the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum! Participants are encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the legacy of the President Truman.
This program is presented as a partnership with the Lou Frey Institute at the University of Central Florida; the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship; the Florida Association of Social Studies Supervisors; and the Florida Council for the Social Studies.
