ISIS and the Question of Islamic Militancy: A Public Conversation
October 22, 2014
On Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora, The Center for Global Islamic Studies, in cooperation with the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and the University of Florida International Center, hosted a panel discussion on ISIS and the Question of Islamic Militancy.
The rise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq has spurred a renewed American tendency to generalize that violence is inherent in the religion of Islam. Using ISIS and the current developments in Iraq and Syria as a point of departure, this panel of UF faculty shed light on religious-based violence and gave a broader perspective with relation to Islamic teachings. The panel also discussed the implications for international politics.
Speakers:
- Prof. Leonardo Villalon, Dean, UFIC: “Political Chaos and Islamic Militancy: Perspectives from Saharan African”
- Prof. Matt Jacobs, Director, Program for International Studies: “ISIS and its Implications in Middle Eastern and International Politics”
- Prof. Terje Ostebo, Center for Global Islamic Studies:”Religious Purity and the Politicization of Purity
- Prof. Vasudha Narayanan, Dept. of Religion
