Ibram Kendi-Stamped from the Beginning

January 31, 2017

Ibram X. Kendi, Assistant Professor of African American history at the University of Florida, spoke in the Pugh Hall Ocora on Jan. 31 about his recently published book Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. The book recently won a National Book Award for Nonfiction.

In the book, Kendi examines the words and actions of American powerhouses, such as Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. DuBois, Angela Davis, Zora Neale Hurston, and Barack Obama, throughout our country’s history to illustrate how deeply ingrained and complex racist thought is in the United States.
