Civil Discourse in Education Today

Against a backdrop of the uncivil and divisive nature of American politics and public discourse today, universities can play a critical role promoting a more civil public and political discourse. Universities can also serve as a place to teach about and model effective civil discourse for our students, communities, and leaders.
On October 27 in the Pugh Hall Ocora, Dr. John Rose, associate director of the Civil Discourse Project at Duke University’s Kenan Institute for Ethics, discussed his experiences teaching about civil discourse and strategies we can all use to create an atmosphere of openness and trust.
He addressed some of the difficult academic questions surrounding political discourse on campus, such as the limits of free speech, classroom norms, and the value of intellectual diversity.
Rose is associate director of the Civil Discourse Project, and teaches courses in Happiness and Human Flourishing, Christian Ethics, Conservatism, and Political Polarization. His research concerns the tradition of virtue ethics and Christian theology. Originally from Iowa, John holds a BA in religion from Wabash College, an MTS from Duke Divinity School, and a PhD in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary.
