Year of the Child

April 10, 2018

Community activists have deemed 2018 to be “the Year of the Child” in Alachua County due to two initiatives on the November ballot that are aimed at helping children.

A panel discussion was held April 10 at 6 p.m. at Pugh Hall on the University of Florida campus to discuss these initiatives, the issues leading to them and their potential benefits.

Panel:

  • Dorothy Thomas, organizer of the campaign for the Children’s Trust of Alachua County
  • Brian Scarborough, chair of Citizens For Strong Schools, the group supporting a school facilities initiative
  • Hector Sandoval, director of economic analysis at UF’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research, who was principal investigator of the “Racial Inequity in Alachua County” report.

Moderator:

  • Nathan Crabbe, opinion and engagement editor for the Gainesville Sun.

The event is free and open to the public and will also be streamed live on our website and Facebook page.

Sponsors: Bob Graham Center for Public Service, the Gainesville Sun and the League of Women Voters Alachua County
