The History of the Future of Fossil Fuels

January 30, 2020

The end of fossil fuel use has been forecast across history, from William Jevons Stanley’s Coal Question in 1865 to M. King Hubbert’s Peak Oil in 1956, through the Green New Deal of our times.

Why do we keep revising our predictions for the demise of fossil fuels? Will we ever run out?

A panel of experts discussed what these forecasts tell us about the future of fossil fuel use, what they tell us about energy, and how we can wean ourselves from this addiction.

The program was presented in the Pugh Hall Ocora. You can watch a streamed recording of the event at https://mediasite.video.ufl.edu/Mediasite/Play/23af803ea75f423888600a0d6adcf06e1d.

This program is sponsored by the Hyatt and Cici Brown Chair of History, University of Florida Department of History, and the Bob Graham Center for Public Service.
