The Great White Hope: Donald Trump, Race, and the Crisis of American Politics

On April 5 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora, Professor Parker discussed his forthcoming book: The Great White Hope: Donald Trump, Race, and the Crisis of American Politics.
Pointing to data on voting behavior and attitudes from the Voter Study Group, Parker contended that anxiety over immigration and terrorism, not the economy, are what drove voters to Trump in flocks. While he acknowledged that most voters cast ballots based on party lines, the data shows significant spikes in racial resentment, particularly toward people of Muslim and Mexican decent, and that the economy was no more important to voters than it was in years past.
Parker also examined the origins of Trump’s rejection among people of color and the political consequences of Trump support and Trump rejection. Along the way, Parker touched on the measurement and meaning of conspiratorial thinking in the American context.
