Innovating Citizenship with the Ancient Athenians

April 16, 2015

Cynthia Farrar, a scholar and civic entrepreneur from Yale University, spoke on Thursday, April 16 at the University of Florida’s Pugh Hall Ocora. Her lecture analyzed the history and theory of democracy in ancient Athens.

In her talk, “Start-up Democracy: Innovating Citizenship with the Ancient Athenians,” Farrar discussed the impact of changing technologies on our democratic system and address innovative changes that can be made in order to realize the ambitions and goals of American democracy. Taking ancient Athens as a model for civic entrepreneurship, Farrar discussed how we can build a democracy that grants equal power to every citizen.

The lecture was the final in a series of six organized by the UF Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere entitled The Work of the Humanities: Critical Thinking in Life and Labor. The series in its entirety focused on how the humanities play a key role in understanding and shaping the future workplace.

This series is made possible by the Rothman Endowment and Yavitz Fund at the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with co-sponsorship from the UF Informatics Institute, Smathers Libraries, Honors Program, College of Public Health and Health Professions, Department of Political Science, Department of English and Phillip Wegner (Marston-Milbauer Eminent Scholar Chair), Department of Philosophy, Department of Classics, Elizabeth B. and William F.
