From Homeless Refugee to Living the American Dream – Derreck Kayongo

January 28, 2014

In 1979, when Derreck Kayongo was ten, his family fled the civil war in Uganda for a better life in America. Kayongo never forgot the experience of homelessness and living in a refugee camp, and today he has made it his mission to help save the lives of millions of children in developing countries, one bar of soap at a time.

Derreck Kayongo shared his experiences and inspired a large Gainesville audience on Tuesday, Jan. 28 in the Grand Ballroom at the Reitz Union.

Kayongo’s life is an inspirational story of fortitude and triumph over the odds. Drawing on the hardships of his refugee experience, Kayongo shares how he went on to manufacture a solution to a global problem, the life lessons he learned along the way, and how they apply to one’s ability to stay relevant in today’s market.
