From Heroes to Hacks: The Disturbing Rise of Bad Teachers on Television

Many Americans have lost faith in public education and its ability to effectively teach our nation’s students. This notion of inadequacy is fueled by media stereotypes and portrayals.
On Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora, the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere, the School of Teaching and Learning, Education College Council and the Bob Graham Center hosted Dr. Mary Dalton for a public presentation about her recent work on the “downward trend” in the perceptions of public education and its profound civic implications.
Dalton is a professor of communication and film studies at Wake Forest University. Her research and writing focuses specifically on the negative perceptions of public educators, the media and the consequences of perpetuating these caustic views. Her scholarly publications include the books The Hollywood Curriculum: Teachers in the Movies, Teacher TV: Sixty Years of Teachers on Television and the co-edited volume The Sitcom Reader: America Viewed and Skewed.
