Former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson Talks National Debt

October 7, 2015

Former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson (R-WY) spoke Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora. President Obama appointed Sen. Simpson in 2010 as co-chair of the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform along with former President Clinton’s Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles. The commission released a report that was praised for proposing a plan which hit all parts of the federal budget and put the national debt on a stable downward path, it is often referred to as Simpson/Bowles report. The report did not reach the 14-vote threshold required to formally endorse the blueprint and have it sent to Congress for approval. Sen. Simpson is also former Director of the Institute of Politics (IOP) at Harvard Kennedy School and was Assistant Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate during part of the 1990s.

The event was sponsored by the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Bob Graham Center for Public Service
