Editor Greg Ip and guests discussed the future of Florida’s economy with the Florida Legislature

January 14, 2010

Leading economic experts hosted an in-depth discussion on the reasons behind the state’s economic woes for members of the Florida Senate and House of Representatives on January 14, 2010. The James Madison Institute and the University of Florida’s Bob Graham Center for Public Service and Reubin O’D. Askew Institute on Politics and Society hosted the forum, entitled “Florida’s Economy after the Great Recession.” With the collapse of the housing industry and the decline in population growth, Florida has been particularly hard hit by the current recession. The event promoted a frank conversation on Florida’s economic and financial future.

Former Gov. Reubin Askew; Senate President Jeff Atwater (R-Palm Beach); and House Speaker Larry Cretul (R-Ocala) opened the forum. Presenters at the forum included: Dr. David Denslow, research economist for the Bureau of Economic and Business Research and distinguished professor in the University of Florida’s Department of Economics; Dr. Kevin Hassett, senior fellow and director of Economic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute; and Greg Ip, the U.S. economics editor for The Economist and former chief economics correspondent for The Wall Street Journal.
