American Civil Liberties: Jon Mills & Howard Simon

Howard Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida joined Jon Mills, dean emeritus, professor of law, and director of Center for Governmental Responsibility at UF’s Levin College of Law, for a discussuion focusing on the big challenges facing Florida in the Pugh Hall Ocora on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.

Topics for discussion included: immigration, the Constitution Revision Commission, restoration of voting rights for felons, public schools and LGBTQ equality issues.

As executive director of the Florida affiliate of the ACLU, Simon oversees the organization’s legal, public education, lobbying, membership and fund-raising programs.

During his tenure, the ACLU has been involved in cases and controversies dealing with school vouchers, separation of church at state, abortion rights, physician-assisted suicide and numerous controversies involving freedom of speech.

Additionally, the ACLU has been extensively involved in addressing the need for electoral reforms in Florida. The organization played a key role in securing the end of paperless electronic voting in Florida, leading to the 2008 election in which every county used the optical scan system.  The organization has also led efforts to end Florida’s policy requiring the lifetime voting ban of former felons.
