Amendment 1: Florida Water and Land Conservation with Bob Graham

September 4, 2014

Former U.S. Sen. and Gov. Bob Graham lead a review and discussion of the Florida water and land conservation amendment that will appear on the Florida ballot. The event included a panel featuring a pro/con discussion with Jon Mills, Dean Emeritus of the Levin College of Law and David Hart from the Florida Chamber of Commerce.

Amendment 1, the Florida Water and Land Conservation Amendment, funds the Land Acquisition Trust Fund to acquire, restore, improve, and manage conservation lands by dedicating 33 percent of net revenues from the existing excise tax on documents for 20 years. Conservation lands include: wetlands and forests; fish and wildlife habitats; lands protecting water resources and drinking water sources; beaches and shores; outdoor recreational lands; working farms and ranches; and historic or geologic sites.

Amendment 1 will appear on the November 4, 2014 ballot. If approved by the voters, it would go into effect on July 1, 2015. Based on current projections, the amendment would provide more than $5 billion over the next 10 years for conservation and restoration of land and water resources.

This program is cosponsored by the League of Women Voters Alachua County/Gainesville and UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources
